What Is Edge Computing?
Edge Computing is a network formed by micro data centers that can process critical data on site. Afterwards, all information is sent to a repository and cloud storage. This technology performs an initial screening of data to reduce traffic to the central repository.
Gartner Research cited it as one of the top trends for the technology market. That’s because Edge overcomes connectivity and latency challenges by delivering content closer to its source. That is why it is considered Edge Computing.
Gartner also believes that companies will soon start using this cloud standard, especially those that use artificial intelligence resources, as Edge Computing has many application possibilities.
Autonomous cars, for example, contain equipment that functions as data centers on wheels. They have an Edge device that enable to carry out data transmission in real time. This prevents vehicles from suffering latency or availability issues.
How Does Edge Computing Work?
Edge Computing can be considered an “anti-latency” model which can help reduce the chance of connection loss or delay. It can be very well applied to the Internet of Things tools that do not have the same efficiency if they are connected to a cloud computing center.
When a company uses Edge Computing, it doesn’t directly send all the data to Cloud Computing. They are first compiled, and the information that is used most often is stored in a location closer to the user. Those that are stored for a long period are transferred to the cloud.
Thus, only the most relevant data crosses the network, reducing information traffic in this medium. Edge Computing can be very useful in places with no good internet connection, for example, as this could make it difficult to access information.
An oil rig that sits in the middle of the ocean is a service model that can utilize this solution. It produces a lot of data that doesn’t necessarily need to go through a network. After all, many of them are related to the functioning of the system itself.
As such, Edge Computing gathers information and sends daily reports to the cloud for long-term storage. Data that is used for a same-day assessment, for example, does not need to be pushed to the cloud.
How Is Cloud Computing with the Edge?
This new computing paradigm will not replace Cloud Computing. The two solutions will coexist. Organizations can collect data, compile it by Edge devices, and perform further analysis on the business. Edge would have the function of reducing the time for sending information to the network.
Furthermore, if any manager needs information that is stored in the cloud, they can bring it closer and leave it in the Edge Computing.
Gartner’s own study addressed this idea of a joint use of the two services to provide the execution of tasks in different environments.
